Museum of Amsterdam, Netherlands uses composite panels

On July 20th, Teijin Corporation of Tokyo announced that the company's fibers were used for the mass production of composite panels that were installed on the exterior of the Amsterdam City Museum in the Netherlands. The museum is considered to be the world's largest composite building.

Most of the panels have now been installed. The seemingly floating white building after painting has a smooth surface without any seams and is matched with the adjacent 1895 historic red brick building.

Teijin's Teflon (aramid fiber) and Naxxe (carbon fiber) composites are used for building exterior walls. In addition to the wall designed by architect Benthem Crouwel, it consists of a single surface covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters / 32,291 square feet. This solution will minimize the thermal expansion of the material to achieve a seamless effect. The design, development and production of the external walls come from the ideas of several experts.

The analysis results provided by the engineering company Solico show that the best solution should be composed of the inner and outer sandwich structure made of composite laminates, Tevaren fibers and nano fibers as reinforcing materials. The resin expands and expands with increasing temperature, due to the negative longitudinal thermal expansion coefficient of Tevalan and Nanos fibers, resulting in minimal thermal expansion of the composite sheet. For every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the seamless look of 100 meters/328 feet is only inflated by 1mm/0.04 inches. If glass or aluminum are used to produce the same outer wall, their expansion is 2.5 times.

Teijin provides Tevalon and Nex fibers to Dutch Composites, using a unidirectional fabric made from this fiber as an intermediate product. The sandwich structure of the inner layer and the outer layer includes two layers of Tevalan fabrics, with the Nex fabric sandwiched therebetween, and the fabrics are perpendicular to each other.

A total of 4850 kg/10,692 pounds of Tevali fiber and 4,050 kg/8929 pounds of nano fibers are used for the exterior wall. The panels are bonded together using a connecting laminate so that the entire exterior wall forms a single unitary body.
