Australian research institute CSIRO claims that its solar cells that can be printed on plastics are coming soon. Australian solar dye battery maker Dyesol has expressed interest in the commercialization of this technology. According to Dr. Fiona Scholes, a senior research scientist at CSIRO, this “solar ink†that converts sunlight into electricity can be used for everything from laptops to rooftops. CSIRO has used printers equipped with solar ink in its offices and printed it on solar cell prototypes for many years. Its current efficiency is equivalent to 10% of conventional silicon. The window of solar ink can achieve a translucent effect, coloring the glass to generate electricity. Small size products can be used for charging devices for smart phones and laptops. CSIRO has also successfully used the battery to generate electricity on its office roof for 18 months. CSIRO also said that using this technology can replace any plastic surface with a solar panel, and its connection is as simple as a battery connection. The project funding is provided by the Victorian government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena).
