Although the role of chromium salt in tanning process is very important, this substance and its residues are very harmful to the environment. In many countries, the law requires that recycling plants must protect the environment from the harm of highly toxic tannery sewage. The current IRESCOP is leading a new research project aiming to develop safer tanning techniques using a chromium-free process called Oxatan based on the environmentally-friendly oxazolone tanning process. The Spanish Shoemaking Technology Association spent several years looking for new materials to replace the chromium used in tanning leather production. This research has yielded excellent results. There is no evidence that using oxazolidine to tannery leather can pollute the environment. The goals of this project are: Promote the use of environmentally friendly leather in the footwear and furniture industry Reducing environmental pollution caused by tanning, shoemaking and furniture decoration Reducing the environmental pollution of leather at the end of its service life Helps footwear and furniture decoration industry to meet legal requirements or voluntary environmental requirements in terms of substance content that is harmful to health and the environment. The results and goals of the LifeOxatan project will be communicated through the following means: networking, trade fairs, trade shows, specialized courses for tannery technicians, user manuals and promotional videos. In addition to the debate about whether terms such as “synthetic leather†are misused, the work of Leather Naturally!’s initiative and organizations such as ICT and CotanceLife Oxatan has also helped improve tanning techniques to protect the environment and treat leather as a The promotion of sustainable, biodegradable materials for footwear, furniture and fashion production.
