The furniture industry chain can be roughly divided into three stages: the first is the raw material procurement stage; the second is the production stage; the third is the end-use stage. Don't ignore the choice of furniture coatings

Furniture production is actually just a physical process. Whether the raw materials of furniture are environmentally friendly is decisive for the environmental protection of furniture products. There are two aspects of furniture materials that are most likely to cause pollution: 1. Boards, various artificial boards need to use chemical raw materials such as adhesives, hardeners, waterproofing agents, etc., which will release free formaldehyde and other harmful substances ; 2. Coatings, unqualified furniture coatings contain a large amount of toxic and harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene.

As far as coatings are concerned, there are still companies that produce and use highly toxic furniture coating products containing ethylene dichloride, driven by interests. The high toxicity of ethylene dichloride will cause great harm to the painters and consumers of furniture factories. The “Environmental Declaration of Furniture Paint Beijing” signed in Beijing in June this year is precisely the efforts made by the paint industry to purify the paint link in the furniture industry chain.

Serious pollution during furniture production

At present, Chinese furniture coatings are still mostly solvent-based products, and if there is a solvent, there must be pollution. According to relevant information, the atmospheric hazards caused by VOC emissions from furniture painting in China are second only to automobile exhaust. At present, most of the furniture manufacturing enterprises control the VOC process is mostly "water curtain cabinet", "activated carbon adsorption" or "water spray + activated carbon adsorption" and other treatment methods, these methods have very limited VOC treatment capacity. Even the VOC processing equipment of some enterprises is just to cope with the inspection, most of the time it is in the standby state, and even that little effect is not played.

Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, once pointed out: "If the production process of furniture is not environmentally friendly, even if the product is qualified, it cannot be considered as environmentally friendly furniture." Furniture often takes several months from production to sale. During this period, many harmful substances have been gradually discharged. When it is really in the hands of consumers, all aspects of furniture have been tested, but this obviously cannot become environmentally friendly furniture. It is conceivable that some so-called environmentally friendly furniture in China is the product of the concentrated discharge of harmful substances. However, the “Notice on Carrying Out the Rectification of Volatile Organic Compound Pollution in Furniture Manufacturing Enterprises” issued by Shenzhen earlier this year is a pioneer in China ’s furniture coating reform. At present, popular environmental protection coatings are divided into two directions: water-based and UV. Many large furniture companies have been at the forefront of the reform of furniture coatings, laying a good foundation for China's true environmental protection furniture industry.

Looking at the four major furniture exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu in 2011, both the organizer and exhibitors are moving closer to environmentally friendly furniture. Quanyou Furniture also claims to build a green industrial chain from the source of furniture materials to the sale of final products.

The one-sidedness that consumers understand allows more furniture companies to distort the true meaning of "environmental protection" for the benefit. To be sure, the quality of furniture products currently on the market are basically qualified, but there are few that can be called environmentally friendly furniture. The word "environmental protection" is more used by the marketing of furniture companies. Few companies interpret the word "environmental protection" in terms of responsibility, morality and conscience. If Chinese companies want to make environmentally friendly furniture, they must look into the future, consider it from the perspective of the industry chain, and do a good job at the source. Environmentally friendly furniture is just like a boat ride.
