Japan's Rijin Tools Introduces CBN Small Diameter End Mill for High-Quality Mold Processing

Japan's Rijin Tools Co., Ltd. has developed cbn ball end mills and cbn arc edge end mills for processing high-grade molds. The performance characteristics and processing application examples are as follows.

1.cbn material properties
The cbn (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) material has a hardness of about 3 times that of the cemented carbide material, and the tool made of it can realize long-life processing.

Cbn material has high hardness and is easily broken. When it is used to manufacture small-diameter end mills that can achieve long-term continuous high-precision machining, it is necessary to use scientific grinding technology and tool design to prevent chipping.

2. Tool features
(1) ssbl200cbn ball end mill
The ssbl200 long neck cbn ball end mill is developed to meet the precision machining needs of high hardness deep cavities. It uses a cutting edge shape that prevents chip edge chipping and reduces cutting load, enabling high-precision machining and long tool life. The r accuracy of the tool is ±0.005mm, and the effective length in the range of r0.05 to r1mm is 0.3 to 10mm, and there are 23 specifications.

(2) ssr200cbn arc edge end mill
The ssr200cbn arc-edge end mill is used for efficient and high-precision milling of molds. In order to prevent the cutting edge from chipping, the cutting edge is subjected to a negative chamfer passivation strengthening treatment. At the time of processing, the company's self-developed control program is used to process from the bottom edge to the circumferential edge at the same time, so that the bottom edge and the circumferential edge can be smoothly connected without any connection, and the r precision is guaranteed to be ±0.005 mm. The tool's specification range is φ0.5~φ2.0mm, the cutting edge angle arc radius is r0.05~r0.5mm, and the effective length is 1.5~10mm. There are 26 kinds of specifications.

3. Processing application examples
(1) ssbl200cbn ball end mill processing example
1 stopwatch mold processing
Using r0.5×5l ssbl200cbn ball end mill to finish milling the stopwatch mold mold material is stavax (hrc52), the processing time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the r part wear amount is about 1 μm after processing one mold cavity. The surface roughness of the machined surface was rz1.30 μm. Finishing can still be continued depending on the wear condition and surface roughness.

2 three-dimensional cavity vertical wall mold processing
Finishing the three-dimensional cavity vertical wall mold with r0.1×1l ssbl200cbn ball end mill, the mold material is stavax (hrc52), the cutting length of one die cavity is about 14m, and the time is about 1 hour and 25 minutes. The tool wears well and the machined surface roughness is rz1.85μm, and the finishing can still be continued.

(2) ssr200cbn arc edge end mill processing example
The mold cavity was finished by φ2×r0.5×6l ssr200cbn arc-edge end mill and compared with the machining results of ssb200 standard cbn ball end mill. The mold material is stavax (hrc52). In the machining plane, even if the theoretical surface roughness is set to the same level, a circular edge end mill can be used to select a larger feed rate than a ball end mill. This time, the precision milling of the arc-edge end mill takes 58 minutes, while the ball-end end mill takes 1 hour and 55 minutes, which is about 2 times. In addition, the quality of the machined surface is different from what can be seen by the naked eye. It can be seen that the selection of the applicable tool in combination with the processing application can improve the processing efficiency and reduce the processing cost.
