Marble Conservation: How to Remove Stains from Marble

The appearance of marble is very beautiful. It is indeed a good choice for home decoration. However, marble cleaning is more tedious because it is not only a porous stone that can absorb various liquids, but also extremely sensitive and can be easily dyed. For example, marble kitchen countertops will be repeatedly dyed, because some liquids such as juice, seasonings, vinegar, etc. will be missed on the countertops from time to time. Even water can leave a stain on the marble if the glass is placed on the marble surface for a long time.

When removing stains from marble, remember that neutral detergents must be used, and those with bleaching properties should not be used. Do not use hard brushes and abrasive cleaners. As with other stones, the best way to prevent marble stains is to clean spills in time. Some owners will use various sealants to protect the marble surface, but in any case, have to reseal it regularly.

1. Acid stains. Drying stains is far better than wiping off stains, because wiping can cause stains to spread. Most of the stains such as vinegar or juice can be removed with a paste made of baking powder and soda. After the paste is dried and hardened, wipe the paste with a wet towel and dry it with a dry towel.

2. Food stains. For hardened food stains, hydrogen peroxide can be used but it should not be too long. Once the stain disappears, wipe it clean with a damp
Cloth and wipe it dry.

3. Grease stains. Use a paper towel to absorb the oil and then use an absorbent such as baking powder to cover the stain area. Place 1 to 2 hours. Then wipe with a damp cloth and wipe dry.

4. Nail polish stains. About a half litre of warm water, place a few drops of dishwashing liquid and wipe it with a clean white cloth. Do not leave dishwashing liquid. Wipe the remaining liquid with a wet cloth and wipe it dry. Repeat cleaning until the stain is completely removed.

There are many neutral sealants on the market that do not damage the marble surface. However, these sealants need to be regularly resealed according to the type of marble. For example, marble floors need to be resealed every 6 months, and the kitchen countertops can be sealed for a period of up to one year. The natural porosity of marble makes sealing essential.

Remove dirt from the sole before entering the door. It's best to put a doormat in the doorway. Also do not use acidic materials such as vinegar, non-alkaline cleaners, etc. to remove stains from the marble. If staining is severe, do not attempt to take your own home remedy. It's best to ask a professional to handle it.
