Talk about the type of edge band

There are many types of edge strips, generally PVC edge strips, furniture edge strips, ABS edge strips, etc. Edge strips are the most basic accessories in cabinets.

There are three roles of the edge band:

The first is an edge seal to prevent moisture intrusion.

The second is to effectively eliminate trace formaldehyde emissions from the board.

Third, reinforce the sheet.

Edge strip type

1, wooden edge banding. The above natural wood such as birch, oak, maple, beech, cherry, etc., has been machined and cut into wooden sheet edge bands.

2, PVC edge banding. Polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride is used as a raw material, and mechanically pressed wood strips, transparent cores, plain and two-color series of plastic edge banding

3, melamine edge banding. The high-quality colored base paper is printed with various wood grain, flower, leather, marble and other art patterns (or plain colors), and then the cured paper edge strips are impregnated with modified melamine grease.

Edge strip specifications and characteristics

1. The wood edge banding has the characteristics of natural, soft and invariable wood grain, strong adhesion when sticking. Its adhesiveness with the furniture sheet is good, especially with the wood sheet. Its specifications: thickness of 0.1 ~ 0.3mm, width of 20mm ~ 80mm (special width can also be customized processing), the length is generally 2000mm. Because the edge strip is very thin, and the fiber density of different woods is different, the wooden edge strip also has the defects of being easy to tear and tear, but the back surface colloidal coating treatment can make up for the above defects.

2, PVC edge banding has heat resistance, oil resistance and strength, hardness, high degree of flexibility; its surface performance is good, wear-resistant, can be trimmed; surface effect is also good, its pattern and color can be close to the natural wood The wood color can also have other color patterns; the PVC edge banding strips whose bottom surface is treated with netting or coating are also very good in binding effect. Its specifications: thickness of 0.2 ~ 3mm, width of 19-50mm, length of 1000mm a roll. PVC edge banding thickness of more than 2mm has a certain degree of stress, must be heated to soften or increase the temperature of the adhesive in use, otherwise it will fall off due to the stress is not firmly bonded.

3, melamine edge banding has the characteristics of wear, fire, oil, moisture, acid and alkali resistance, and has excellent flexibility, strong adhesion after adhesion, not easy to fall off advantages. Its specifications: thickness of 0.2 ~ 0.4mm, width of about 25mm, length of 1000 ~ 2000mm. The melamine edge band has excellent bending properties and will be better when heated, but it has flaws that are easily broken.

How to use the edge band

The wood edge banding is mainly applied to the pasting and decoration of the edge profile of the solid wood furniture plate, and can only be completed by manual paste method in operation. The glue used to glue the wooden edge strips is a water-soluble glue or a strong glue. As long as the edge of the sheet is smooth, there is no specific requirement on the ambient temperature. Since wood is a hygroscopic material, its moisture content will change due to the influence of external temperature and humidity. Therefore, what kind of adhesive should be selected according to the seasons and moisture diffusion and penetration requirements. Only by mastering the choice of the type of adhesive can the adhesive be formed through the penetration of the wood fiber to form a good “rivet fixing effect”. In addition, furniture decorated with wooden edge strips must be painted on the surface.

PVC edge banding is mainly applied to the edge sealing of micro-uprights, density boards, blockboards, and plywood, and solid wood sealing can also be used. In practical use, it can be done by manual paste and mechanical paste, but mechanical paste can be used to improve work efficiency. Adhesives used to glue PVC edge strips are all-purpose adhesives and hot-melt adhesives and white latexes, but hot-melt adhesives are preferred. In the pasting, the PVC edge band is firmly adhered to the surface of the wooden board through mechanical interlocking, physical attraction, and chemical bond. Therefore, the straightness of the substrate profile is required to be high during the pasting, and the general tolerance should not be greater than 0.1 mm. The temperature of the board and the ambient temperature of the bonding work should be 18°C. The curing time of the hot melt adhesive is generally 30 minutes, but the choice of low temperature adhesive or high temperature adhesive is determined according to the thickness of the edge strip.

The scope of application of melamine edge banding is basically similar to PVC edge banding. However, the edge of the fire board is best. In the operation, manual and mechanical edge-sealing will do; the requirements for adhesives such as hot-melt adhesives, all-purpose adhesives, and white latex are not high; adhesives can be arbitrarily selected in the market by using flat stickers and rolling stickers; hot-melt adhesives are used for adhesives. For the mixture, the melt control temperature is 120°C-160°C, the pressure is 4-6 / 2, the curing time is 20-50 seconds, and the ambient temperature is 15°C when the indoor paste. In view of the fact that melamine edge banding has higher permeability than hot melt adhesive and adhesive than PVC, the amount of glue coating should be reduced when it is glued to the sheet. Generally, it is controlled within the range of 6-8g/linear meter. In mechanical edge sealing, the visual inspection effect is that the adhesive layer is evenly coated and the texture is clear; the mechanical coating speed is 30 to 50 m/min, and the edge sticking and running speed is the fastest when the various edge banding edges are sealed. This will not only guarantee the quality of the paste, but also increase the work efficiency.

Different cabinet brands will use edge banding. There are various ways of edge banding. There are PVC edge banding, metal banding, etc. However, the process used for edge banding is very different, for example, some small ones. Some unbranded brands often use some low-cost edge-sealing equipment for edge-sealing. They use hot-melt adhesives with high formaldehyde content for edge-sealing. After this edge-sealing comes out, they do not restrict the release of formaldehyde, but because of the glue High levels of formaldehyde increase the amount of formaldehyde released. Second, the use of simple equipment and even manual edge sealing, the effect of the edge is not beautiful enough, but also after a period of use, the edge band will arch up, will drag the plate deformation, because of the deformation of the cabinet door.
